Description
Looking to cover your science quickly and easily but no extra time? No problem! This is the unit for you. This unit is designed to be a self-taught unit. The sheets are written in such a way that students can complete the questions independently and with little interaction from parents. However, lessons are included for parent guidance with additional activities for every page. While the lessons are written from the classroom perspective they are easily used in a homeschool setting with no additional materials required from you. With the exception of the experiment where you simulate the workings of the heart all items can be done in a homeschool setting.
This inquiry-based unit, which meets the Ontario Ministry of Education Social Studies curriculum for Grade 5, provides a variety of activities meant to allow students to explore the human body.
Topics include:
Circulatory System
Recount Writing
Nervous System
Urinary System
Digestive System
Skeletal System
Text Features – and so much more!
All text is written at a grade 4 text level with plenty of interesting pictures for students to enjoy. In addition, questions are similar to EQAO style questions so students can complete them and also be prepping for standardized testing! Following each informational page, there are questions and activities for students to complete. In addition, there are also several writing tasks for students such as an explanation and a recount.
Also included are illustrated word wall cards so students can review unfamiliar vocabulary terms, games to play with the vocabulary cards, and a wax museum project or game as a culminating task (complete with rubric and research sheet). With over 75 pages there are more than enough to complete with students.
This is a comprehensive unit and it is 75 pages of information, blackline masters, reading activities, and a very fun culminating project! It will integrate reading, writing, science, health, and research skills. Students love this unit and you will love it for its ease of use and ability to let students be independent with learning. I have updated the unit and added several more pages.
There is nothing you need to know about science or the human body before teaching this unit. All pages are ones that could be left for a supply teacher including instruction pages. At the end of the unit is an interactive activity that could be used for many other subjects with its own checklist to mark easily and quickly.
